What is a conservative to do?
The General Assembly has ended its session and passed a budget.
First, the good news.
There was no tax increase.
The Senate tried to increase the tax on gasoline. Defeated.
The Senate tried to increase the sales tax. Defeated.
The Senate tried to increase the grantors’ tax. Defeated.
House Republicans stayed true […]

One of the biggest disappointments this session and with this final budget is the continued funding of Planned Parenthood here in Virginia that both the Senate and the House had previously rejected in recent weeks.
According to the Family Foundation,
“Last month, the House of Delegates approved budget provisions prohibiting state funding of abortions and research […]

It was great reading conservative Senator Mark Obenshain’s most recent legislative update this morning on the budget. While he had some good things to say about it, like a reduced withdrawal from the “rainy day fund” and it protects funding for rebenchmarking for K-12 education, these few accomplishes seem greatly overshadowed by its shortcomings.
Now […]

If only the 2005 Governor’s race worked out better for republicans and we had Governor Kilgore instead of Governoe Kaine. Yesterday afternoon Kaine vetoed two bills that passed with bipartisan support, having cleared a Democrat controlled Senate, due to his opposition to capital punishment. Jerry Kilgore made no qualms about his strong advocacy for Virginia’s […]

In a blatant display of weak leadership, Governor Kaine today buckled to the pressure of the anti-gun lobby by vetoing two gun bills that were passed with bipartisan support.
SB 436 would make it much safer and simpler for lawful citizens to transport guns in their vehicles. This particular piece of legislation passed the House […]

If you have a second, please read Lt. Governor Bill Bolling’s latest newsletter. It lays out the differences between the Senate and the House budgets, and shows the strength that all 19 Republican Senators are showing in fighting the Democrats tax and spend policies for an expansion of government. This is all you’ll need to […]
Staying true to form and conforming to the warnings of conservatives, the Democratic controlled Senate approved a bill calling for a gas tax hike over the period of six years. All of the Senate’s 21 Democrats voted in favor while 4 Republicans deserted and voted to help raise taxes. Sen. Hanger, Harry Blevins, Fred […]

The Washington Times:
People would be allowed to store guns in a locked glove box or other interior compartment of a vehicle or boat even if they lack a concealed-weapons permit under legislation that passed the Senate yesterday.
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine vetoed similar legislation in 2006 for fear that it could endanger law-enforcement officers. The Senate […]

The Associated Press:
RICHMOND, Va.-A Virginia state Senate committee killed legislation backed by families of the Virginia Tech shooting victims to close a loophole that allows criminals and the mentally ill to buy firearms at gun shows without a background check.
The Courts of Justice Committee voted 9-6 today to reject the bill before sending it to […]

The WaPo was diligent in highlighting the rural vs. urban divide among the Democrat’s new Senate majority this past December and while the Democrats are enjoying their status it is becoming obvious of the fault lines running through the Senate caucus. Rural Democrats from the Southwest, in districts that favor Republicans in statewide races, […]
